New Browns GM, coach will decide Johnny Manziel’s future with team

BEREA, Ohio — Quarterback Johnny Manziel was in the news again in the final weekend of the season. He was not on injured reserve for the game with the Pittsburgh Steelers because he was inactive due to being in the NFL concussion protocol.

Manziel was in Las Vegas on Saturday. He was not required to attend the game against the Steelers and in fact was not permitted on the sideline because of his concussion. However, he was scheduled to attend a treatment session on Sunday for his concussion and skipped it.

Manziel was at the Browns' facility on Monday but did not meet with reporters.

One of the first orders of business for the new coach will be to decide whether he wants to keep Manziel. Earlier this season former head coach Mike Pettine benched Manziel for two weeks for lying about partying during the bye. Pettine was fired on Sunday.

"That's a question Sashi (Brown, the executive director of football operations) and our new GM and our new coach will answer," Haslam said. "That will be completely their call."

--Center Alex Mack is not tipping his hand on his future plans. Mack can opt out of his contract, which has three years remaining. He met with reporters briefly after the 28-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and said he has not made up his mind.

Mack could be waiting to see who is hired as head coach. Mack, a 2009 first-round pick, has played for four head coaches — Eric Mangini, Pat Shurmur, Rob Chudzinski and Pettine.
