Brad Rothermel leaves job as adviser to UNLV athletic director, says he’s retiring

Brad Rothermel, the UNLV athletic director during the basketball team’s glory days who most recently was the special adviser to the AD, retired Thursday.

“I was getting close to 80 years old, so I felt it was a good time to do it,” he said. “I’ve worked in this business a long time. I’ve had some great experiences. It was time to get out and see what remains with my life.”

Rothermel, 78, served as UNLV’s athletic director from 1981 to 1990, the final year coinciding with the basketball team’s national championship. In 2001, he was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.
