UNLV roundup: Men’s golf team four strokes back in opener

Sophomore Justin Kim shot a 3-under-par 69, two strokes off the pace, en route to helping the 12th-ranked UNLV men’s golf team sit in fifth place Friday after one round of the season-opening, 19-team Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Kim, who had six birdies, is sixth individually. Junior teammate Harry Hall is tied for seventh at 2-under 70 in the 111-player event.

Colorado State leads the field by two strokes at 6-under 282. Colorado and Wyoming are tied for second, followed by Texas-El Paso (285) and UNLV (286).

Also for the Rebels, sophomore Yash Majmudar is tied for 24th (72), freshman Jack Trent is tied for 39th (73), senior Shintaro Ban is tied for 55th (74), and sophomore Justin Chong is tied for 107th (82).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

At Flagstaff, Ariz., Amanda Galbraith scored her third goal of the season in the 107th minute to lift the Rebels to a 2-1 overtime win over Northern Arizona.

Michaela Morris scored her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Sophie Cortes, in the 47th minute to open the scoring for UNLV, which is off to its first 6-1 start in program history.

Adrian Nixt scored on a header with 35 seconds left in regulation for the Lumberjacks (4-2), who hadn’t allowed a goal in winning their previous four matches.

The Rebels had a 19-16 edge in hots.

VOLLEYBALL

At Cox Pavilion, Mariena Hayden had 16 kills and 19 digs to lead the Rebels (4-5) to a 3-2 win over Weber State (1-6) in the UNLV Challenge.

Ashley Owens had 14 kills, Thea Sweder and Elsa Descamps each had 13 kills, and Jill Berg added 12 kills for UNLV, which won by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8.

Riley Jacobs had 60 assists and eight digs, Leka Kiner-Falefa had 24 digs, and Shania Scott had 16 digs for the Rebels.

In UNLV’s second match of the day, the Rebels’ late rally fell short in their 3-2 loss to UC Irvine (7-1).

Hayden had 18 kills and six digs, Owens 13 kills, Descamps 12 kills, Berg 19 digs and Jacobs 43 assists for UNLV, which fell by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12.

MEN’S SOCCER

At Johann Memorial Field, Alfredo Acala had a goal and an assist to help No. 11-ranked Pacific to a 3-0 win over the Rebels (1-3).

Anthony Odendain opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Acala then assisted a goal by Camden Riley in the 39th minute and scored unassisted in the 41st.

The Tigers (5-0) held a 14-10 edge in shots.
