On the eve of the groundbreaking for the Fertitta Football Complex, UNLV announced Las Vegas Sands will contribute $1 million toward the facility.
“The generosity and support of the iconic Las Vegas Sands will help make this transformational project a reality,” UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said in a statement. “The Complex and the opening of our new stadium in 2020 will have a profound impact on our university and on our beloved city and with leaders like the Sands out in front, Las Vegas can become the epicenter of sports in this country.”
An attempt to reach Andy Abboud, Sands senior vice president of government relations and community development, was unsuccessful.
A private groundbreaking for the complex is scheduled for Tuesday. More than $22 million has to been committed to the project, which is expected to cost about $28 million.
“Through the incredible kindness of the Adelson Family and the Las Vegas Sands, our new home is one step closer to completion,” UNLV football coach Tony Sanchez said in a statement. “This project will help permanently transform our university’s football program and we can’t wait to experience all that it will offer for our student-athletes, coaches and staff.”
Tight end, guard commit
UNLV added football commitments from tight end Montrice Johns and guard Amani Trigg-Wright.
“Had a fantastic visit at UNLV this weekend,” Johns tweeted. “The team, the city, and the coaches showed love I’m blessed to have this opportunity.”
