Rebels get another transfer

ELY -- UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck doesn't stop recruiting when signing day ends.
Two more players joined the Rebels on Tuesday, including Taylor Walstad, who transferred from Arizona State.
Walstad (5 feet 11 inches, 205 pounds) will have to sit out this season because of NCAA transfer rules. Though he was a running back at Arizona State, he will play linebacker for the Rebels and have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Rivals.com and Scout.com rated him a three-star recruit out of Chandler (Ariz.) High School in 2010.
Walstad also was ranked the nation's No. 37 running back by Rivals and the No. 6 player in Arizona.
Scout rated him the country's No. 51 running back.
Walstad said he has been interested in playing for UNLV since attending a camp there when he was a sophomore at Chandler.
"I loved coming out to UNLV," he said. "It was just a good feeling I got every time I came out here."
As for the change to linebacker, Walstad said his main priority was cracking the lineup and "any way I could help out this team would be great.
"They said they needed a linebacker. I played a lot of linebacker in high school."
Freshman fullback Darius Andres (5-10, 215) of Claremont (Calif.) High School also joined the Rebels. He is expected to redshirt.
Several notable players have walked on to UNLV this training camp, including defensive backs Dre Crawford, Daniel Harper and Peni Vea, linebacker John Lotulelei and defensive lineman Alvin Amilcar.
NOTABLE
UNLV had probably its most physical practice of camp Tuesday. "We're fatigued, like we would be at this point," Hauck said. "So it's not as fast as you'd like. But it was a pretty heavy practice." ... Several players were injured, including senior tight end Kyle Watkins, senior running back Deante Purvis and junior wide receiver Eric Johnson. Hauck, though, said none of those injuries was serious. ... Redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Barnhill has been working on the kick and punt return and coverage teams, and could see action on special teams during the season. "He's a pretty good athlete, and if you travel with three quarterbacks, you hate to take a guy and have him stand there the whole time," Hauck said.
