Dad says he put trash in dead baby’s room, crib to cover smell

A man has been arrested and charged after the body of a one-year-old girl was discovered on Wednesday in an Ohio apartment surrounded by trash that police say he was using to cover the smell.

The baby, identified as Ember Warfel, was believed to have been dead since June 18 and was discovered by a cable installer, police said. The baby's body was so decomposed that the baby's sex wasn't initially known, WEWS reported.

No one was notified of her death.

Shortly after the discovery, the baby's father, Eric Warfel, was arrested in a nearby park, where he was playing with his 7-year-old daughter. Warfel admitted in court that he threw trash in the baby's room and crib to cover the smell of her decomposing body, KTLA reported.

Warfel is charged with abuse of a corpse in the death of his daughter, with more charges expected. His bond was set at $1 million in his first court appearance on Thursday.

It was revealed in court another one of Warfel's children, 5-year-old Erin, died in 2013. Her death was ruled "unexplained" and no manner of death was determined.

The cause of death for Ember remains under investigation.
