Galleria at Sunset slated to receive face-lift

More changes are in store for the Galleria at Sunset mall.

On March 27, the mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, kicked off the 30,000-square-foot expansion of its new wing. The $24.1 million expansion is expected to include 12,000 square feet of outdoor space and six new restaurants.

“We wanted to add a new element to our center,”said Heather Valera, director of marketing for the mall. “Adding an outdoor venue is something new and fresh. It gives us an opportunity to offer more events for shoppers.”

The parking lot in front of the mall’s entrance next to Macy’s — where the expansion is taking place — is already under construction. Even walking through the mall, guests can see renderings of what’s to come.

“(The expansion) will be the grand entrance to the mall,” Valera said.

Along with a fresh new look, she said the new space has allowed mall officials to toy with ideas such as a jazz series in the outdoor plaza to a children’s water play area.

“The new ambience will be nice for the new restaurants,” she said. “It will be a great place for people to hang out.”

Chevy’s and Red Robin are expected to remain open during the expansion.

Valera said Sugar Factory is slated to expand to its third location in Southern Nevada, along with Bravo! and Larson’s Grill, which will have their first locations in Las Vegas.

“The remainder (of the restaurants) will be announced later this year,” she said.

The expansion is slated to be finished in November, in which each restaurant is scheduled to deal with the interior design.

After the holiday season, Valera said the north side of the mall is also expected to undergo changes.

The Galleria at Sunset mall, owned and operated by Forest City Enterprises, opened in 1996 and features more than 140 retailers.

In 2013, the mall went through a $7 million renovation, which included fresh paint, improvements to the food court and guest services area and additions of new stores such as H & M.

“We have had a tremendous response from shoppers,” Valera said. “We have received a lot of compliments, especially on the huge transformations to our food court. We gave (the mall) a more modern and sophisticated feel.”

Mohammad Rais, who works at the Cell Link II kiosk in the mall, said he likes the new look of the mall.

“We have been here 11 years,” he said. “I think (the renovations) is what we needed. It took some time to do it, but it looks good.”

Rais said he is also excited for the changes ahead.

“I think it will attract more people,” he said. “I think it’s time that we had more restaurants.”

It was the first renovation the mall went through since it opened in 1996.

Even though the mall is undergoing changes, all the shops are slated to remain open, and the store hours are expected to remain the same.
