Learn how to care for trees, shrubs
at garden club meeting

The Sunset Garden Club plans to meet at noon today at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson. Norm Schilling, owner of Schilling Horticulture Group, plans to discuss "Taking Good Care of Trees and Shrubs in Southern Nevada." Schilling is an ISA-certified arborist and co-host of KNPR radio's show, "Desert Bloom." This event is open to the public.

Bowl-A-Thon to benefit S.A.F.E. House

Desert H.O.P.E. Inc. is sponsoring its sixth annual Bowl-A-Thon to benefit S.A.F.E. House from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at South Point Bowling Center, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. There will be bowling prizes and door prizes. Bring a $20 donation or $20 in pledges to bowl. Lanes for this event were donated by South Point. The event is open to the public. SEMINAR discusses reasons
BEHIND OVEREATING

A seminar called "Fat Head, Fat Body" is planned for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Club Sport Green Valley, 2100 Olympic Ave. The seminar explains the correlation between the mind and weight gain. Diana Gibbs, a published psychology author and former UCLA academic counselor, discusses why people overeat and how to take control. The seminar costs $20. LIBRARIES to HOST HEALTH SEMINARS

Henderson Libraries is hosting a free series called "60 Days to Better Health" where people can learn about eating right and fitness. From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, people can attend "Find Your Inner Samurai" and gain insights to the ways of the samurai.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, people can hear about brain foods, presented by Trader Joe's.

City to offer workshop on college applications and scholarships

The Henderson Blue Ribbon Commission On Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity plans to host its free annual college application and scholarship workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20-21 at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Walk-ins are welcome pending space availability.

The workshop includes one-on-one assistance, information for parents, applications, tips about college life and scholarship resources.

Parents and teens also can learn how to write a college resume, draft a solid cover letter, complete college essays and submit successful college applications.

Desert Newcomer Club to host luncheon, coffee

The Desert Newcomers Club Inc., for women in the Las Vegas and Henderson area who have lived here three years or less are welcome to attend a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 21 at Black Mountain Golf & Country Club, 500 Greenway Road. Cost is $28. The luncheon is scheduled to include at 13-vendor fair with items for sale.

On Sept. 22, the club plans to host its monthly coffee at 10 a.m. at Chabad, 10870 S. Eastern Ave., Henderson.

Councilwoman to host neighborhood connections meeting Sept. 22

Councilwoman Kathleen Vermillion is slated to host a Neighborhood Connections night for Ward III residents from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.

The event is expected to be different from past Neighborhood Connections meetings. A family night is planned and is set to include demonstrations by SWAT, the K-9 unit and the fire department in the first half-hour, followed by the main evening where residents can interact with city officials.

The event also includes arts and crafts activities for children 4 or older. The first 100 schoolchildren can receive a free back-to-school kit, which includes a pencil, folder, notebook and an eraser.

NINE henderson STORES FINED
FOR SELLING ALCOHOL TO MINORS

Henderson police officers recently conducted alcohol compliance checks for 73 convenience stores. The community relations unit was able to administer the checks with the help of underage volunteers.

Out of the stores checked, 64 stores passed by not selling alcohol to minors.

The nine that failed were Rebel gas station, 10000 S. Eastern Ave.; City Stop, 971 S. Boulder Highway; Lee's Discount Liquor, 1338 S. Boulder Highway; Shell gas station, 500 Conestoga Way; AM/PM gas station, 4161 E. St. Rose Parkway; 7-Eleven, 835 Seven Hills Drive; Trader Joe's, 2716 N. Green Valley Parkway; Vons, 45 E. Horizon Ridge Parkway; and Branded Meats & Deli, 1550 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway.

The clerks were issued a citation for selling alcohol to minors and face a maximum penalty of six months in jail or a $1,000 fine.
