HENDERSON OFFERS FREE TREE RECYCLING

The city of Henderson is encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas trees after the holidays through a free recycling program.

Holiday trees can be dropped off Dec. 26-Jan. 17 at Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St.; Anthem Hills Park, 2256 Reunion Drive; Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 N. Arroyo Grande Blvd.; Mission Hills Park, 551 Mission Drive; Morrell Park, 500 Harris St.; Pecos Legacy Park, 150 N. Pecos Road; and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.

Any non-organic material, including lights, ornaments, wires, tinsel, and nails, must be removed from trees. These items cannot be recycled and could damage chipping equipment. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATIONS HONORED FOR COMMUNITY WORK

Henderson recently recognized seven homeowners associations for efforts to make a difference in the neighborhood with its Premier Community Award.

The award is given to a community that has completed a project in the last year that benefits the neighborhood.

The groups honored included Bluffs Homeowners Association, Coventry at Anthem Homeowners Association and Coventry Kids Club, Mountainside Homeowners Association, Newport Cove Homeowners Association, Sentosa Homeowners Association, Sun City Anthem Community Association and Trailside Point Property Owners Association.

NEVADA STATE COLLEGE PLANS EVENT FOR COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS

College-bound students are invited to an open house from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 16 at Nevada State College, 1021 E. Paradise Hills Drive.

Open to new, returning and transfer students, the event is expected to have an overview of academic programs, a faculty meet-and-greet, a walkthrough of the admission process, financial aid workshops and campus tours.

HENDERSON TARGETS BUSINESS FRAUD DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The city of Henderson has increased its business license inspections of local shopping areas to watch for unlicensed businesses and fraudulent services.

During the holiday season, unlicensed and fraudulent businesses often attempt to set up in high-traffic retail areas, which is in violation of city ordinances.

Anyone conducting business within the city of Henderson is required to have a proper license.

FEMALE VETS SOUGHT FOR PTSD STUDY

Researchers at UNLV are looking for women to participate in a research study on post-traumatic stress disorder. The aim of the study is to examine the role of stress hormones in combat-related PTSD in women.

Women between the ages of 18 and 35 who have served on active military duty within the past five years may be eligible to participate. Participants will fill out questionnaires, complete a brief interview and provide saliva samples for measurement of stress-related hormones.

Study completion requires two one-hour visits to the UNLV campus. All participants are eligible to receive free counseling. All personal information will be kept confidential, and participants can choose to discontinue the study at any time.

ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER RECEIVES DESIGNATION

Bristol Ellington, the city of Henderson’s assistant city manager, recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association.

More than 1,300 government management professionals were credentialed through the program.

To receive the credentials, a member must have significant experience as a senior management executive in local government; have a degree, preferably in public administration or a related field; and have demonstrated a commitment to high standards of integrity.

SMASHBURGER TO HOST SCHOOL UNIFORM DRIVE

Smashburger has partnered with Communities in Schools of Nevada to collect uniforms for students in 20 participating Southern Nevada schools.

Items are set to be collected through Dec. 31 at all Las Vegas Valley Smashburger locations.

Requested items include jeans and khaki and navy blue pants in children’s and adult sizes, navy blue and white polo shirts in children’s and adult sizes, socks and underwear and shoes in children’s size 12 to adult’s size 10.

All items should be new and not gift wrapped. Smashburger has agreed to give a free side order to people who bring in one item for donation and a free classic Smashburger for those who bring in two items.
