Turns out Hello Kitty is not a cat

Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty, have decided to redefine what it means to be a cat.

The company said this week that Hello Kitty is a little girl, according to the LA Times. She is not a cat, and has never been a cat — despite having whiskers, a tail and ears that make her look suspiciously like a cat.

After the outcry at the company’s claim, a rep walked it back a little, saying Hello Kitty is a “personification of a cat.”
