Woman killed after 2 struck by SUV in North Las Vegas

Updated January 2, 2023 - 3:25 pm

A woman believed to be in her 50s died after an SUV struck another vehicle and then a man and a woman on a sidewalk on New Year’s Day in North Las Vegas.

Just before 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, North Las Vegas police received a call about a vehicle and two pedestrians struck at North Aliante Parkway and Nature Park Drive, according to North Las Vegas police spokesperson Officer Alexander Cuevas.

Police said a silver Suzuki XL7 backed into a tan 2015 Ford Fusion, and the Suzuki driver drove off after briefly stopping at the scene. The Suzuki driver, identified Monday as Fernando Reyes, then ran a red light and struck a black 2012 Toyota Prius and two pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Both pedestrians, a man in his 60s and the woman were taken to University Medical Center, Cuevas said.

The woman died at the hospital and the man suffered “serious injuries.”

The drivers of the Fusion and the Prius were not injured.

Reyes tried to run off after the second crash, but he was arrested nearby and booked on charges of leaving the scene of a crash, reckless driving, impaired driving resulting in death and substantial bodily harm, operating an unregistered vehicle, violating an instructional permit and driving without a seat belt.

North Las Vegas police thanked the witnesses who stopped Reyes from walking off after the crash.

“If you’ve used marijuana, or any other impairing substance, don’t get behind the wheel,” police wrote in a statement. “Pass the keys to a sober driver who can safely drive you to your final destination. It is never okay to drive while impaired by any substance.”
