Henderson Boys & Girls Club closed for week after building vandalized

First smashed windows, now closed doors.

About 60 Henderson children will be out of their normal after-school care this week after at least one vandal smashed nearly all the Henderson Boys &Girls Club’s windows late Sunday, causing about $22,000 in damage.

“It’s frustrating,” especially because it’s not the first time the 1608 Moser Drive clubhouse has been vandalized, said Steve Davidson, chief operating officer for the club’s Southern Nevada chapter.

The building — named after Mary and Sam Boyd — saw a few windows broken twice last year and twice again this year before Sunday’s smashing, which left 22 window panels shattered, including a handful that were floor-to-ceiling in height.

“It’s been an ongoing problem,” Davidson said. “Our main purpose is to provide services for the kids in that community, and when you take that away, you’re not only doing something wrong, but you’re also affecting other peoples’ lives.”

Henderson Police Department spokeswoman Michelle French confirmed officers were called out about 9 p.m. Sunday to the clubhouse, which borders Wells Park south of Boulder Highway and Sunset Road.

Davidson assumes the person or people responsible may be juveniles, because nothing was stolen from the clubhouse.

Nevertheless, the latest incident will take about 10 days to repair because the windows have to be specially made. The club is considering building a wall instead of replacing the larger windows that border Wells Park to “eliminate the problem, which is a shame because it’s a beautiful view, but we have to keep the kids safe,” Davidson said.

Club officials are meeting with at least one city official and one officer Tuesday to discuss the club’s future security. The clubhouse is working with nearby elementary schools to see if children and staff can meet there instead of the damaged building this week, but as of Monday afternoon nothing had been decided.
