Person killed, another hurt in central valley apartment shooting

A person was shot and killed in the central valley early Saturday morning, police said.

Just after 3 a.m., Metro patrol officers were investigating a report of a shooting in the 3700 block of Swenson Street at the Shelter Island Apartments complex, near Swenson’s intersection with Twain Avenue, according to a Metro news release. While investigating the shooting, officers received a second report of a shooting in the same complex.

Police found a gunshot victim, suffering from nonlife-threatening injuries, and a second uninjured resident of the apartment, the release said. Police believed the suspect was also shot and still in the apartment.

Officers located the suspect inside of the residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Police said an investigation by Metro’s homicide section revealed that the two victims were in the apartment when an armed suspect, who was unknown to them, entered. One of the residents got a gun and fired several rounds at the suspect, while the suspect shot the other resident and injured that person, the release said. That resident was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center to be treated for injuries.

The identity of the person killed will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office. Metro said this was the 37th homicide investigated in its jurisdiction in 2016.
