Man killed in officer-involved shooting near Stratosphere

An officer-involved shooting just east of the Stratosphere left one man dead Monday night, a Metropolitan Police Department official confirmed.

Before officers arrived, another man was injured in a separate shooting, Sgt. Jeff Clark said early Tuesday. That man underwent surgery at University Medical Center and is expected to survive, Clark said.

Police later said the man had several gunshot wounds.

The first shooting happened about 10:15 p.m. at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard South and St. Louis Avenue, Clark said. When officers arrived, witnesses directed them to the possible shooter a block east at the Siegel Suites, 2000 Paradise Road.

That’s where officers chased and confronted the man witnesses mentioned, and where at least one officer shot him, Clark said. Emergency crews quickly responded, but the man shot by officers died at UMC.

A firearm was found on scene, Clark said.

Tyler Krym, 23, said he was sitting on his balcony at the Siegel Suites late Monday when he “started hearing a lot of gunshots.”

Krym said it sounded like 20 shots were fired. With so many shots being fired, he said, “the first thing I thought was that there was a gunfight.”

His initial instinct was to put his head down, he said. When he later looked out, Krym said he saw one officer with his gun drawn.

“I heard cops yelling, ‘Shots fired!’ ” he said.

At that point, Krym said two or three police cars were on the scene, but “all of a sudden there was like 15 or 20.”

Before the shooting, Krym said he heard a lot of yelling. “It sounded like commands,” he said.

It is unclear what led to the first shooting. It was also unclear how many officers fired or what happened in the moments that led up the shooting involving police.

Any officers involved in the shooting will be named after 48 hours, per Metro policy. The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the man fatally shot by police after his family has been notified.

As detectives continued to investigate Metro’s fifth officer-involved shooting of the year early Tuesday, the sounds of people screaming on the Stratosphere tower’s thrill rides could be heard.
