‘Girls Night’ holiday sequel opens Smith Center run

Girls just wanna have fun. Especially at this time of year.

Just ask the title characters of " 'Twas a Girls Night Before Christmas: The Musical," which opens a six-day run Tuesday in The Smith Center's Troesh Studio Theater.

A sequel to "Girls Night: The Musical," which has played The Smith Center's Cabaret Jazz this year and last, " 'Twas a Girls Night Before Christmas" follows its predecessor's successful formula: plenty of jukebox-worthy tunes, plenty of comedic observations, plenty of audience participation.

The holiday sequel focuses on the original "Girls Night" quintet. There's party-girl Carol, a two-time divorcee, who's looking for a third whirl on the marry-go-round; manic-depressive Anita; Liza, who's married with four kids and always complaining about her husband; Kate, Carol's younger sister, a schoolteacher who feels overshadowed by the others; and Sharon, who's there in spirit (literally), as a not-so-cherubic angel who can't help tagging along with her pals, even from the great beyond. (She died at 17.)

Together, these ladies dish, drink and ponder seasonal pressures from overcrowded malls to overlong visits with the in-laws. And, of course, they sing favorite contemporary and Christmas tunes, which is right in tune with the "Mamma Mia!"-meets-"Desperate Housewives" original.

" 'Twas a Girls Night Before Christmas: The Musical" opens at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Troesh Studio Theater at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, 361 Symphony Park Ave. Additional performances are at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday.
