BLM TO TAKE PUBLIC COMMENT ON PROPOSED FENCE

The Bureau of Land Management’s Red Rock/Sloan Field Office plans to host a public meeting at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center classroom, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive, to discuss a proposed fence around Schumacher Spring. The fence would be used to help restore the area to a functioning riparian system.

An environmental assessment analyzing any impacts from a proposed fence around the spring, located in the Lucky Strike Canyon Area, will be available for public comment Oct. 10-24.

The area around the spring has been heavily degraded, and there is little vegetation left in the immediate area. This has led to erosion problems, with more than 1 foot of soil being lost in some adjacent spots. The preferred alternative in the assessment is a steel three-rail fence encompassing 3,900 square feet of the hillside, including the spring head.

The fence will not encompass the entire length of the surface flow so that wildlife will still have continuous access to drinking water. Where the fence crosses the surface flow, there will be multiple posts along the flow so that the fence line can be moved depending on the reach of the surface flow. This will ensure that surface water always flows outside the fence while maximizing the restoration area. The fence likely will be constructed this fall.

FINAL 2014 READING WITH RASCAL EVENT SET FOR OCT. 11

The next Reading with Rascal event is slated from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 11 in the multipurpose room of Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive. This will be the final event for 2014. Children can read to a certified therapy dog. Families do not need to be members of the church.

This event will be a costume party, and everyone is encouraged to wear costumes. Many of the dogs and their handlers will be in costumes.

The 2014 National Nurses Half Marathon & 5K is set for 7 a.m. Oct. 11. The course starts in Blue Diamond and finishes at West Career & Tech Academy, 11945 W. Charleston Blvd.

BROKEN SPOKE BIKES TO SUPPORT CANDLIGHTERS WITH CYCLING EVENT

Broken Spoke Bikes and The Snyder Group are gearing up to support the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with a Mount Charleston Hill Climb scheduled for Oct. 11. The Goodie Two Shoes Foundation’s fifth annual Rockin’ Walk is planned from 9:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 12. Shuttle service is set to begin at 8 a.m. and run every 15 minutes. Parking at TPC Summerlin will be available only by permit.

AMERICA FIRST CREDIT UNION PLANS FOOD DRIVE

America First Credit Union plans to host its 10th annual community food drive Oct. 9-18. All Southern Nevada branches will be accepting donations of nonperishable food items to distribute to local food pantries and food banks.

The credit union started the drive in 2004 and with the help of employees and members and has collected more than 100,000 pounds of food. This year, the most needed items include canned vegetables, canned tuna fish and peanut butter (no glass).

OUTSIDE LAS VEGAS FOUNDATION EXPANDS ADOPT-A-TRAIL PROGRAM

The Outside Las Vegas Foundation is expanding its Adopt-a-Trail program beyond the city of Las Vegas to include unincorporated Clark County. There are 120 miles of urban trails available for adoption for a $500 donation per mile, which can be renewed annually.

Businesses and individuals who donate $3,000 or more to adopt a segment by Oct. 15 will be honored as Trailblazers at Get Outdoors Nevada Day on Oct. 25. Those who donate from $500 to $3,000 will be recognized as Pioneer sponsors.

The ALS of Nevada’s 14th annual Run, Walk & Roll event is slated for 6 a.m. Oct. 25 at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS PLANS FALL SUIT DRIVE NOV. 7

A women’s fall suit drive is planned from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 at NV Energy, 6226 W. Sahara Ave. Drive-through donations can be made at the parking lot.

Hosted by the United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council, the annual one-day suit drive collects suits and other business attire for women in need. The drive helps women prepare for career opportunities and gain confidence to succeed during job interviews and in the workplace. Last year’s drive collected more than 7,000 professional items, including suits, dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry.

AARP SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR FREE TAX PREPARATION PROGRAM

The AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program plans to offer free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low to moderate income. In its 46th year, the program is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to the older population. The service is offered in conjunction with the IRS and is open to anyone, not just AARP members.

Last year in Nevada, 260 volunteers helped more than 12,700 people file federal tax returns and answered tax-related questions. The program is offered at senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations.

The program needs volunteers. Tax volunteers must complete a tax preparation workshop from the IRS prior to working with taxpayers. There is also a need for grass-roots leadership, on-site greeters and those who can provide language assistance in Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese.

COATS FOR KIDS SEEKS DONATIONS

Harriet’s Coats for Kids is seeking donations of new or gently used children’s coats, to be distributed in the Las Vegas Valley through The Salvation Army.

Donation boxes can be found at area Albertsons stores. Everyone who donates a coat has an opportunity to win two tickets to the “Million Dollar Quartet” show.
