Las Vegas police: Knife-wielding woman shot by officer
March 22, 2014 - 12:45 am
A female officer responding to a domestic disturbance call Friday night shot a knife-wielding woman who came at her when she exited her patrol car, Las Vegas police said.
The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. in an apartment complex near Tropicana Avenue and Celo Lane, near Pecos Road.
The woman who was shot was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in unknown condition.
The disturbance involved a man and a woman who was armed with two large kitchen knives, said Metro Capt. Matt McCarthy at a press conference shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday. The domestic dispute spilled into the apartment courtyard, with the knife-wielding woman pursuing the man.
The officer arrived on scene to find the woman standing near Tropicana and Celo Lane. When the officer made a U-turn and got out of her vehicle, McCarthy said the armed woman came at her from about 5 feet away. That’s when the officer pulled her weapon and shot the woman.
The name of the involved officer will be released within 48 hours, per department policy.
A portion of Tropicana was closed while police investigated the shooting.
This is the Metropolitan Police Department’s fifth officer-involved shooting this year.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
