Nevada DOE agrees to fix website in settlement with federal government

The Nevada Department of Education reached a settlement with the federal government after an investigation revealed its website lacked functionality for blind and low-vision visitors.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Steve Canavero signed the settlement agreement, dated June 16, and agreed to make an “all new” website with content and functionality available to people with disabilities. The state department also will conduct an audit of existing content of its website, www.doe.nv.gov, and propose an 18-month plan to correct all inaccessible portions of the site.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the voluntary agreement Wednesday in a news release.

After receiving a complaint in February, the federal department’s office of civil rights investigated the state agency’s site and found missing text descriptions, called “alt tags,” that describe images to blind and low-vision users.

The Washoe County School District and Davidson Academy at the University of Nevada, Reno reached separate agreements with the federal department to settle similar complaints.
