UNLV Black Mountain Institute names new director

UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute has a new executive director, the department announced Thursday.

Joshua Wolf Shenk, 44, will succeed current director Carol Harter as the head of the literary writing center, department spokesman Joseph Langdon said in a news release.

Shenk was brought in to to lead new programs that include a $50,000 literary prize, Langdon said.

Before his appointment, Shenk served as director of The Rose O’Neill Literary House at Washington College in Maryland. His writing career includes stops at The New Republic, The Washington Monthly, and The Economist. He also has written for Harper’s, The Atlantic and Time.

The Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute is closely tied to the creative writing program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Harter, whom Shenk will replace, established the institute in 2006 after stepping down as UNLV’s first female and longest-serving president.
