I-15 northbound reopened after fatal motorcycle crash

A 29-year-old Louisiana man was killed and northbound Interstate 15 near Cheyenne Avenue was closed for over five hours after a Saturday afternoon motorcycle crash, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada announced the reopening about 7:45 p.m.

A preliminary investigation determined that about 2:40 p.m. two motorcyclists were traveling at a “high rate of speed” on I-15 when one of the motorcycles struck the other one, NHP spokesman trooper Loy Hixson said.

The rider whose motorcycle was struck lost control and crashed into the right concrete barrier, throwing the 29-year-old from the bike and killing him, Hixson said. His motorcycle continued traveling about 500 feet.

The other motorcyclist was able to maintain control, stopped and remained at the scene where he was cooperating with investigators, Hixson said.

It is too early to determine if charges are going to be filed, he said.

Authorities will later identify the motorcyclists.

With temperatures increasing, it’s common to see more motorcycles out on valley roads, Hixson said. It is also when more motorcycle fatalities are seen.

Just because motorcycles allow riders to go at a faster speed doesn’t mean they should, Hixson warned. He said that no matter how experienced a rider is, a “little mistake” can lead to a “fatal result.”
