Man dies after crashing ATV in desert near Jean

Metro police are investigating an all-terrain vehicle crash that left a 30-year-old North Las Vegas father dead Friday night in the desert northeast of Jean.

About 10:30 p.m., the man, Carlos Guzman, was riding his Yamaha ATV across the Jean dry lake bed when it crossed an area of raised dirt mounds, police said. Evidence at the scene and witness statements show the vehicle became airborne, and the man was ejected, Metro said.

Guzman and the ATV slid to a stop. Emergency crews responded to the site, but Guzman, was pronounced dead.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help pay for Guzman’s final expenses.

“A very unexpected tragic event (happened) that has turned a loving family upside down. Carlos Guzman has passed on, leaving his children, mother, father, brothers and sister and everyone else lost for words,” a message reads. “We are asking for any possible donation to help with the cost of funeral services and to help his family…This is a very difficult time for everyone and anything is appreciated.”

As of about 11 p.m. Saturday, just under $500 had been contributed to the GoFundMe account.

The crash remains under investigation by Metro’s collision investigation section.
