Five killed in British Columbia avalanche

TORONTO — Five people were killed in an avalanche near the community of McBride, British Columbia, the coroner's office for the Canadian province said on Friday.

The five were killed snowmobiling in a "very large" avalanche, Barb McLintock, a spokeswoman for the B.C. Coroners Service, said in an e-mail, adding that there was little information so far.

CBC News, citing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said the avalanche happened around 1:30 pm Pacific Time in the Mount Renshaw area. The report said one person was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police did not immediately respond to calls and e-mails seeking comment.
