Northern Nevada prison reports water outage

Lovelock Correctional Center prisoners were without water over Labor Day weekend, the Nevada Department of Corrections reported.

John Witherow, the head of Nevada CURE — Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants — a prisoners rights group, said the group began getting calls from inmates at the Pershing County facility northwest of Reno on Friday, though the department of corrections said the problem didn’t start until Saturday.

Portable toilets and water were brought in while the repairs were made. Corrections officials said the problem was a water pressure issue. Witherow said the portable toilets weren’t available until Sunday.

The repairs were done Monday evening, and as of Tuesday afternoon, the water system was “fully up and operational,” a corrections spokeswoman said.

Witherow said Lovelock has had water issues in the past, but never for multiple days at a time that his group could recall.
