Las Vegas, Clark County started the new year with Twitter turf war

Clark County government's resolution for 2016 appears to be making sure everyone knows the Las Vegas Strip isn't actually in the city of Las Vegas.

On Jan. 2, the city of Las Vegas tweeted that taking selfies on the Strip was a "Great way to celebrate in our great city!"

Let the Twitter turf war begin.

Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa responded with a terse tweet saying the Strip wasn't in Las Vegas. The city didn't care.

"Sorry, there's no convincing the hundreds of thousands of visitors they're not in the @cityoflasvegas! #acceptance" the city account wrote back.

Then things got esoteric.

"They're in #LasVegas when on the Strip, not the @CityOfLasVegas. You'll continue to try to mislead them," Pappa fired back.

The Review-Journal reported in March that county officials take note of whenever Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman ventures outside the city limits for events in unincorporated Clark County. They call and email businesses, closely watch the city's Twitter feed and quietly work to ensure county commissioners are included in Strip events and not overshadowed by the Goodman entourage.

It seems the public can expect the county to continue taking a stand in 2016 against the perception that tourist attractions such as the Las Vegas Strip and the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign are in actual Las Vegas.

To hammer the point home, the county also sent out a map to media.

"With the advent of the new year and there being some new reporters/producers/editors/photogs in the market, I thought it might be a good time to again share with you this map delineating jurisdictional boundaries," Pappa wrote in an email Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Clark County's Twitter account sent out a link to an August Review-Journal article about the jurisdictional history of why the Las Vegas Strip isn't actually in Las Vegas.

A Review-Journal reporter noted the county's renewed commitment to the boundary battle on Twitter, to which the city of Las Vegas tweeted, "Welcoming/engaging with tourists is good for all of us...whether they know where they are or not :)"
