Reid predicts Clinton win, pointing to Trump’s narrow support base

RENO — U.S. Sen. Harry Reid talked presidential politics in a wide ranging question-and-answer session with members of the media Tuesday.

He predicted that Democrat Hillary Clinton will win Nevada and the presidency in the Nov. 8 general election in part because Republican nominee Donald Trump has a narrow base of support among voters.

“I think we’re going to win in Nevada,” he said in his office at the federal building. “I think there aren’t enough white, uneducated men in Nevada to elect him. He’s going to lose. I am convinced the American people will not vote for Donald Trump.”

Reid blamed Republicans in Congress during President Barack Obama’s time in office for Trump’s candidacy because they advanced the ideas that Trump now advocates.

“So everything you hear him say that is crazy is just one version of what’s taken place the last eight years.” Reid said.

He also criticized Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., for supporting Trump. Heck is running against Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto to replace Reid in the Senate.

“I am disappointed that someone like Donald Trump, led by my congressional Republican leaders, would want the American people to hear how bad America is,” Reid said.

He called the Trump slogan “Make America Great Again” stupid.

“In my book America is pretty good right now,” Reid said. “We’re the envy of the rest of the world. So I feel really upset at Donald Trump and anyone who would want to vote for this guy who wants to denigrate America. That’s what he does and that’s what they do and it’s wrong. America is just fine.”
