This year’s Las Vegas Bowl set for Dec. 17
The Las Vegas Bowl will celebrate its silver anniversary Dec. 17 at Sam Boyd Stadium. The 12:30 p.m. game will be televised on ABC for the fourth straight year.
The Las Vegas Bowl, the 16th oldest of the 40 bowls, features the top choice from the Mountain West against the sixth pick from the Pac-12.
No. 22 Utah held off rival Brigham Young 35-28 in last year’s Las Vegas Bowl before a crowd of 42,213, the event’s eighth sellout in the past 11 years.
“Fans have shown that they love coming to the Las Vegas Bowl on the first Saturday of bowl season,” Las Vegas Bowl executive director John Saccenti said. “The weather has been spectacular the last four years with the 12:30 p.m. kickoff, and we are excited to celebrate our game’s 25th birthday on ABC.”
The annual December game will feature its fifth straight Saturday kickoff and 10th day game on its earliest date since 1995, when it was played on Dec. 14.
The bowl, which is entering the third year of a six-year contract with its conference partners, is seeking a new title sponsor after Royal Purple decided not to renew its three-year deal.
The bowl game originated from the California Raisin Bowl, which was played in Fresno from 1981 to 1991. The game relocated to Las Vegas in 1992 and was renamed the Las Vegas Bowl.
