Ray McDonald faces suspension if charged

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald faces a suspension or termination of his contract if he is charged with a crime, according to ESPN.

McDonald’s court date for Monday was cancelled and no new date will be scheduled “unless or until charges are filed,” the Santa Clara County district attorney tweeted Friday.

However, McDonald’s case will continue to be investigated.

McDonald was arrested at his home Aug. 31 on suspicion of felony domestic violence. Police said McDonald’s fiancee had “visible injuries.”

McDonald was later released on $25,000 bail. He has not been charged.

The 49ers and NFL have allowed McDonald to play since his arrest, saying they are waiting for the legal process to play out until taking any actions regarding discipline.

However, a league source told ESPN that if “any damaging information or facts are documented by the investigation and charges are filed,” the 49ers would reconsider how they approach McDonald’s situation.

The possible discipline McDonald would face if he is charged depends on what evidence is uncovered by police and how the district attorney views the case.

The 49ers host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
