Las Vegan Frank Mir flagged for possible drug test failure
Las Vegan Frank Mir has been informed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency of a potential violation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s drug policy as a result of a test conducted on March 20, the organization announced late Friday.
Mir, a Bonanza alum and the former heavyweight champion, was knocked out by Mark Hunt on that day in Brisbane, Australia, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 85.
USADA is the independent administrator of the UFC’s anti-doping program. According to a statement released by the UFC, USADA will handle the results management and adjudication of the case.
No announcement was made as to the source of the positive test. Mir, 36, formerly competed under a therapeutic-use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy before the practice was banned in the sport.
Mir could not be reached for immediate comment but he did post about the test to Instagram.
He has lost his last two fights after back-to-back first-round knockout victories in 2015. Mir captured the heavyweight title in 2004 and then won the interim belt in 2008.
Mir missed out on a chance to win the belt again in 2012 when he lost to Junior dos Santos at UFC 146.
