Arizona State hires Bobby Hurley

Bobby Hurley is the new basketball coach at Arizona State.

Sun Devils athletic director Ray Anderson announced Hurley’s hiring on Thursday. He replaced Herb Sendek, who was dismissed after nine seeasons as Arizona State coach.

“With Bobby at the helm, we will provide the necessary resources to compete within our state, our conference and across the nation,” Anderson said in a statement. “We are intent on becoming an elite men’s basketball program.”

The former Duke standout leaves Buffalo after leading the Bulls to the NCAA Tournament for the first time and a Mid-American Conference championship while finishing with a 23-10 overall record. In two seasons at Buffalo, he posted a 42-20 record.

Arizona State’s search was focused on Duke assistant Jeff Capel before he withdrew from consideration earlier this week. School officials met with Hurley on Thursday in Tempe, Ariz.

“In Bobby Hurley, we have found a top flight coach who will take our basketball program to the next level,” university president Michael Crow said.

The 43-year-old Hurley was an assistant at Wagner and Rhode Island before going to Buffalo. As a player, he helped lead Duke to back-to-back National Championships in 1991 and 1992.

Under Sendek, Arizona State reached the NCAA Tournament twice in his nine seasons at the helm.
