UNLV women’s volleyball sweeps Air Force at home

The UNLV women’s volleyball team continued its winning ways at Cox Pavilion on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-16, 25-10) over the Air Force Falcons.

The Rebels, who have won nine straight in their home venue, improved to 13-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Mountain West while the Falcons fell to 9-6 overall and 0-2 in the Conference.

UNLV’s home streak began with a 3-1 triumph over the Fresno State Bulldogs in the 2015 season finale. The run is only two shy of a program-best 11 straight from last season.

The Rebels were paced by Bree Hammel and Sadie Stutzman, who combined for 23 of the team’s 44 kills as well as a .459 hitting efficiency. Hammel threw down a match-high 12 kills off a .381 efficiency and also added four total blocks (one solo), three digs, two aces and one assist. Stutzman hit a match-best .562 with 11 kills in 16 swings.

Alyssa Wing added eight kills of her own to go along with two assists, two digs and one assisted block.

Alexis Patterson led all with 29 assists and contributed four kills, four digs, two assisted blocks and one ace.

Defensively, Carly Riehl and Elisa Woinowsky paced the squad with seven digs apiece while Ashley Owens had a match-high four total blocks (one solo).

MEN’S GOLF: The No. 25 UNLV men’s golf team finished in seventh place after a final round 8-over-par 296 on Saturday at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, which was played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course (par 72, 7,555 yards).

UNLV junior Shintaro Ban led the Rebels and finished in a three-way tie for third at 2-under 214 after a final-round-low 4-under 68. He had seven birdies and three bogeys.

Rebel junior John Oda also finished in the top 15 as he tied for 14th at 4-over 220 after a final round 4-over 76.

San Diego State captured the team title by 10 shots at 1-under 863 after a final-round 2-over 290. Colorado State finished second at 9-over, followed by BYU at 14-over.

Colorado State’s Blake Cannon earned medalist honors by two shots at 6-under 210 after a final-round 2-under 70. San Diego State’s PJ Samiere finished second at 4-under.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: A trio of Rebels will play for singles titles Sunday after advancing during Saturday’s second round of the annual UNLV Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

In Flight 2, Rebels’ Carol Yang downed Hayley Thompson of Long Beach State (6-3, 7-5), and will face Zoe Katz of USC on Sunday for the championship. In Flight 4, UNLV’s Cristina Moroi defeated Georgia Lawson of Fresno State (6-2, 6-1), and will compete against Angela Kulikov of USC for the title. In Flight 5, Rebels’ Jovana Kenic knocked off Ege Tomey of Washington State (6-0, 6-2), and will face off against Brandy Walker of NAU in the finals.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. Sunday and is free and open to the public.
