Woman kidnapped, raped during robbery

A man has been arrested and charged after a woman says he kidnapped and raped her from a Northland, Mo., parking lot.

Court documents detail the woman's terrifying ordeal when a routine grocery store visit led to her abduction. Her ordeal ended with her naked and screaming for help from cops working to rescue her.

Scott A. Hamm, 29, is facing charges of felony first-degree attempted rape, six counts of armed criminal action, two counts of first-degree sodomy, kidnapping and two counts of robbery.

Police were called to a Target off of Interstate 35 and Chouteau Trafficway about 11:30 p.m. Monday on a reported armed robbery. A man at the grocery store reported that a woman had just been forced to drive away at gunpoint.

A woman told police she was in the parking lot of the nearby Festival Foods talking to a man outside of their vehicles when the suspect came up to them asking for a light. They said they didn't smoke so the suspect left, but he returned about 10 minutes later to ask for a ride. When the two refused, the suspect, identified as Hamm, pulled out a silver handgun.

The suspect ordered the man to give him his car keys, wallet and cellphone and then ordered him to get into his own vehicle. He then pointed the gun at the woman and told her to get in the driver's seat of her vehicle. The woman then drove the suspect away from the scene.

According to court documents, Hamm forced the woman to drive about a mile away where he then ordered her to park in a daycare parking lot. He threatened her, telling her he had just gotten out of jail for attempted murder. He ordered the woman to undress and forced her to perform sexual acts on him. He also touched her inappropriately and she told police she believes he held his gun the entire time.

While police were searching for the woman and her vehicle, they found her car parked in the daycare parking lot near Northeast Parvin Road and Chouteau Parkway. The woman and suspect were both in the vehicle and the woman later told police Hamm ordered her to get back into the driver's seat and drive off.

Instead, the woman opened the driver's side door and ran terrified and naked towards awaiting officers. Police said the suspect got out of the vehicle with his zipper down and was arrested without incident.

When Hamm agreed to speak with police, he first told investigators that he was walking through the Target parking lot when he saw the man and woman arguing. He claims he approached them because he wanted to protect the woman.

Hamm claimed he showed the man his gun while trying to protect the woman, but that he never pointed it at anyone. He also claimed the man threw his keys and wallet at Hamm and walked away without being asked to do so. Hamm told investigators that the woman initiated sexual contact and that they drove off and had consensual sex.

Later court documents say Hamm recanted and confessed to robbing the man. He never fully admitted to raping the woman, but court documents said, "Hamm stated the victim never said no, but that there may have been a 5 percent chance that she felt threatened by him and that she did not have a choice but to have sex with him."
