Award-winning BBQ couple show off grill skills at Jessie Rae’s

Summertime, and the grillin’ is easy — especially if it’s done for you. With its Western decor and atmosphere, Cactus Jack’s Saloon, 10648 S. Maryland Parkway, is a perfect spot to operate a barbecue joint. Who better to cash in on the opportunity than Jessie Rae’s BBQ?

Co-owner Mike Ross established the original Jessie Rae’s, named for his wife, in September after honing his skills in various barbecue competitions. Together, the grilling gurus have already accumulated a handful of awards, including being named the People’s Choice Champion at the 2014 Lake Havasu Music, Brews & BBQ Championship; 2014 Downtown Throwdown BBQ Championship; and the 2015 Las Vegas Ribfest Championship.

With hard work and delicious recipes, a second location was born inside the saloon earlier this year. Self-billed as “Las Vegas-style barbecue,” the restaurant focuses on bringing together eclectic crowds, culture and culinary goods.

The eatery offers a variety of daily smoked meats, including brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken and sausage. Due to the cook time and freshness of the food, certain dishes may run out so it’s best to get there early or call ahead. Meat combos cost between $11 and $19.

Signature sandwiches include “The Jessie Rae” (pulled pork topped with cheese, house sauces, coleslaw and barbecue potato chips) and “The Scared Sandwich” (pulled dark-meat chicken topped with coleslaw and house sauce). Prices range between $10 and $13.

Sides cost $2 and include macaroni and cheese, smoked pork belly baked beans, and barbecue mashed potatoes.

The Cactus Jack’s location is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Diners must be 21 or older. Call 702-880-9500.

The location at 5611 S. Valley View Blvd. is open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday. It is open to all ages. Call 702-541-5546.
