1. Emergency Kit Cook-Off: The free event is slated from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. Attendees can celebrate National Preparedness Month with a cooking competition that challenges local government officials to prepare gourmet dishes using items and food from a 72-hour emergency supply kit. 2. Doggie Paddle & Play Day: Dogs can go for a dip in the pool at the annual event, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Road. Registration is $10 per dog in advance or $15 at the door. Dogs weighing 30 pounds or less swim from 8 to 9:15 a.m.; dogs weighing 31 to 70 pounds swim from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. or from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; and dogs weighing 71 pounds or more swim from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Dogs must be canine- and people-friendly. Owners must supply proof of pet licensing and vaccinations from the city where the dog resides and are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. 3. Prince Jonah Kuhio Ho'olaule'a & Pacific Islands Festival: The 25th annual event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 12 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. The free event will celebrate the Pacific Islander culture with the sights, sounds and smells of Hawaii, Tahiti and the Samoan Islands. 4. Paradise Pointe Park grand opening:The city of Henderson plans the celebration for 9 a.m. Sept. 12 at 15 Archer Glen Ave. City officials are set to attend the event, which is slated to include basketball activities and refreshments. A free valet is scheduled to be available for residents who ride their bicycles to the event. The 5-acre park features a playground, a basketball court, open turf, horseshoe pits, a skate element, tetherball and a covered picnic area with barbecues. Super Run Classic Car Show: The 16th annual event is planned Sept. 24-27 in the Water Street District, featuring 1,000 vehicles, including hot rods, muscle cars and vintage automobiles from across the nation. A kickoff for the free event is slated from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Fiesta Henderson, 777 W. Lake Mead Parkway, and festivities are set to start at 10 a.m. Sept. 25-27. Super Summer Theatre:The season-closing "Lend Me A Tenor" is set for 7:05 p.m. Sept. 10-26 at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, 6375 state Route 159, about 10 miles west of the 215 Beltway. Racers from 15 countries are expected to participate in the CLIF Bar CrossVegas-sponsored event that requires competitors to travel on various terrains — pavement, grass, steep hills and barriers — and in some places, cyclists will dismount to navigate obstacles, then remount their bicycles to finish the race.
