CSN SAFE ZONES TO BE DESIGNATED FOR LGBTQ STUDENTS

The College of Southern Nevada recently launched a Safe Zone program for LGBTQ students at the school.

The program aims to promote a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ individuals and educate and promote understanding, appreciation and respect for everyone.

The program includes special training for CSN faculty and staff members and the identification of Safe Zones throughout CSN’s campuses. The zones will be identified by stickers placed in conspicuous areas.

The spaces are to provide judgment-free areas for students to visit with faculty and staff members who have gone through the training. Information about pertinent resources in the community also will be available.

FREE CHILD SAFETY EVENTS PLANNED

A free child safety event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 11 and noon to 4 p.m. April 12 at Las Vegas Harley Davidson, 5191 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The event will offer FBI-certified palm and fingerprints for children, along with digital photos and a safety profile should they go missing.

METRO SEEKS POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS

Applications for Metropolitan Police Department candidates are set to be accepted through 3 p.m. April 13.

Candidates must have completed the 12th grade and possess a high school or general education diploma. Candidates must also: pass a background check; possess a Nevada driver’s license; be age 21 by May 12; be a U.S. citizen; and have no crime convictions.

VETERANS GRADUATE FROM SPECIALTY COURT PROGRAM

Jason M. Brooks, James U. Eshragh and William E. Gunther graduated April 2 from the Las Vegas Municipal Court’s Veterans’ Court program.

The specialty court focuses on defendants who are current or former military members. Drug and alcohol treatment, mental health and medical services, vocational assistance and other services are part of the program. Services are coordinated between the Veterans Affairs Department and other community partners.

UPGRADES ON CHARLESTON BOULEVARD DOWNTOWN TO LAST THREE MONTHS

The construction of median islands along Charleston Boulevard between Sixth and 11th streets is set to last three months and cause minor traffic delays, the city of Las Vegas announced.

The $700,000 project also is set to include a new pedestrian crosswalk with a solar-powered flashing beacon at 11th Street. Three of the median islands are slated to be landscaped with trees and shrubs, and one median island will feature decorative rock.

The improvements are planned primarily from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. All lanes are slated to be open except for one westbound lane, which is set to be closed through April 12. Work is expected to be completed by June.

HENDERSON PLANS JOB FAIR FOR WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR, LIFEGUARD POSITIONS

A summer aquatics job fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18 at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway, the city announced.

The fair is set to provide people 16 or older with information about lifeguard and water safety instructor job opportunities. The seasonal, part-time positions support the city’s 11 aquatic facilities and hundreds of Learn-to-Swim classes and events.

Candidates can apply at cityofhenderson.com before attending the fair so interviews can be scheduled during the event. Applicants should bring copies of their lifeguard or water safety instructor certifications and be prepared to take part in a water skills test. Applicants younger than 18 must have a parent present.

Those interested in lifeguard positions who have not earned their certifications will receive information about the American Red Cross lifeguard training program, hosted at the city’s pools year-round.

FIREARMS PRESENTATION SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 9

The Nevada Firearms Coalition plans a presentation on firearms responsibility in the home at 6 p.m. April 9 at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway.

The event is set to cover how to prevent accidents in the home, general safety and handling, recommendation for safe storage and more. Registration is required.

SPONSORSHIP HELPS FUND NDOT’S FREEWAY PATROL THROUGH 2017

A new State Farm sponsorship of the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Freeway Service Patrol is scheduled to help fund the service through 2017, state officials announced.

As part of the sponsorship, Freeway Service Patrol vehicles are set to be updated with enhanced, highly reflective safety markings to make them more visible. The State Farm logo will also be added to the patrol’s trucks and operator uniforms.

NDOT has provided the Freeway Service Patrol in Las Vegas and Reno for more than 15 years to enhance freeway safety and help clear incident scenes within an average time of 10 minutes. The patrol also assists motorists to remove stalled vehicles, provides basic first aid, extinguishes minor vehicle fires and more.

Operators patrol fixed freeway routes during peak travel hours. Each operator is a certified automotive technician with certifications for emergency vehicle operation, fire protection, CPR, handling hazardous materials, traffic flagging and offering first aid.

SCAMMERS SEEK TO COLLECT PAYMENTS, ENTER HOMES OF WATER DISTRICT CUSTOMERS

The Las Vegas Valley Water District recently issued a warning about suspicious activities involving people who claim to be district employees and ask to enter customers’ homes to inspect for leaks or collect payments.

District employees drive vehicles clearly marked with the district’s blue and yellow logo, wear a photo ID badge with the Las Vegas Valley Water District logo in plain view and sometimes wear bright green shirts. Employees also will not ask to enter a home to collect a water sample or check for leaks, and they never request or collect payment at people’s homes.

Residents who are concerned about someone who has approached them or called their home regarding their water service can call 702-870-4194 from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. After-hours calls can be made to the district’s emergency number, 702-258-3150.

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU PLANS FREE SHREDDING AND RECYCLING EVENT

A free shredding and recycling event is scheduled from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 18 at the Better Business Bureau, 6040 S. Jones Blvd.

Materials to be accepted include cardboard, plastic, aluminum, wood and metal. Old cellphones also are slated to be accepted for recycling.

Participants can bring nonperishable food items or money to be donated to Three Square.

FREE SHREDDING EVENT PLANNED

Residents can have their documents shredded free during a Ward 2 Shredding Party set from 10 a.m. to noon April 11 at Ansan Sister City Park, 7801 Ducharme Ave. For more information, call 702-229-1100.

INTERNATIONAL TOURISM SAFETY CONFERENCE PLANNED

The 22nd International Tourism Safety Conference is scheduled for April 26-29 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, 3150 Paradise Road.

The event is for safety and security officials in the travel and tourism industries and focuses on providing new information, trends, equipment, strategies and best practices for keeping visitors safe.

Guest speakers from Clark County and around the globe are set to offer presentations addressing the state of tourism security, global terrorism, human trafficking, workplace violence, pandemic health issues, nightclub security, community policing and more. A Tourism Oriented Policing and Protective Services certification course also is slated to be offered.

The conference’s hosts are the International Tourism Safety Association, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Metropolitan Police Department and the Las Vegas Security Chiefs Association.

BOOTH TO OFFER INFORMATION ON DEALING WITH DISASTERS

The city of Henderson Office of Emergency Management plans to man an information booth dealing with disaster preparedness from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road.

The booth is set to include information on preparing an emergency supply kit, developing a disaster-response plan and staying informed.
