Seuss-style celebration: Merryhill students mark author’s birthday

On March 2, preschool and kindergarten students from Merryhill Preschool, 10050 Alta Drive, celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday through a variety of activities fitting the theme of his books and incorporating science, technology, engineering, arts and math learning outcomes. Activities included making “oobleck,” or goo, similar to what falls from the sky in the book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck;” creating paper mache balloons like those in the book “Oh the Places You’ll Go;” and practicing counting with red and white blocks, reminiscent of “The Cat in the Hat.” A disc jockey played music to accompany outdoor activities, including “Pin the Tail on Horton” and “The Cat in the Hat” bean bag toss. Dr. Seuss’s birthday is National Read Across America Day. The National Education Association’s Read Across America program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnership and reading resources. For the week, Merryhill Preschool students were challenged to read 10 books.
