The choices Las Vegas voters will have at the ballot box this year just keep on growing. In addition to the horde of candidates running for mayor, a crowd of challengers has been drawn to the Ward 3 City Council race. Former state Democratic Party chairwoman Adriana Martinez filed to run for the seat Thursday.

Mother files suit against driver who struck daughter

The mother of Takara Davis has filed a lawsuit in Clark County District Court against the driver of the car that struck the 13-year-old on Jan. 4 while she and a group of schoolmates attempted to cross Durango Drive near Nevso Drive.

Service sector expands at fastest pace in 5 years

WASHINGTON — The U.S. service sector, which employs nearly 90 percent of the work force, grew in January at the fastest pace in five years, a sign that hiring could pick up soon. The Institute for Supply Management, a private trade group, said Thursday its index of service sector activity rose to 59.4 last month. That’s the 14th straight month of growth. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion.

Stop the presses: First iPad newspaper debuts

NEW YORK — Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. launched the first iPad-only newspaper Wednesday. It is hoping the right combination of traditional reporting and technological wizardry will lure enough subscribers and advertisers to pay for a new way of delivering journalism. News Corp. plans to charge 99 cents per week or $40 per year for the newspaper, called The Daily.

Mammoth storm leaves bitter cold, destruction

MILFORD, Conn. — An enormous winter storm left Midwesterners shivering in its frozen footprint and crushed snow-laden buildings in the Northeast, where a combination of ice, snow and rain pushed much of the winter-cursed region to its breaking point. Wind chills dipped to nearly 30 below in parts of the nation’s midsection early Thursday. The sprawling system unloaded as much as 2 feet of snow, crippled airports and stranded drivers in downtown Chicago as if in a prairie blizzard.

Jalen Grimble, a senior defensive end from Bishop Gorman, signed his national letter of intent with Miami on Wednesday, bringing an end to the frenzied recruitment one of the nation’s most prized pass rushers. The NCAA signing period for football, soccer, track and field and cross country began Wednesday. It will end April 1 for football and Aug. 1 for other sports.

Judge overturns restraining order against Bank of America

Chief U.S. District Judge Roger Hunt overturned a state court order that had stopped Bank of America Corp. unit ReconTrust Co. from foreclosing on property in Nevada. Nye County District Judge Robert Lane had issued the order Jan. 20 that suspended ReconTrust foreclosures on an estimated 7,500 pending foreclosures around Nevada.
