State Taxation Director William Chisel acknowledged Wednesday that the number of business audits performed by his staff has declined but that auditors are concentrating on companies where the return potentially is larger. Chisel said the number of auditors who review whether businesses are paying taxes they owe the state has dropped to 55, compared to 71 in 2009.

Escrow officer sentenced in mortgage fraud scheme

Brenda Jackson, an escrow officer indicted in a nationwide initiative targeting mortgage fraud, was sentenced Wednesday in Las Vegas to two years in prison. Jackson also was ordered to join her co-defendant, real estate agent Curtis Briley, in paying about $1.8 million in restitution.
