The Skyhawks seemingly contend for a state team title every five years, and Saturday was no different as they overcame injuries and wintry conditions to claim the championship at the Division I state track and field meet at Carson High.

Nick Tapuala won the discus at the Division I state track and field meet with a mark of 178 feet, 9 inches despite unfavorable conditions at Carson High and became the third Liberty thrower to take home a state title in the event since 2011.

After sweeping both hurdles in this year’s Sunrise meet Saturday, the quick-learning David Washington will be seeking a repeat performance at the Division I state meet, which begins at 3 p.m. Friday in Carson City. The meet concludes Saturday.

Palo Verde’s Jack Trent shot 3-under-par 69 in the final round and finished with a two-round total of 5-under 139 to earn his second consecutive individual state title.

SUNRISE TRACK: Diminutive James wins two sprints

Las Vegas High’s James took first in the 100-meter dash in 10.69 seconds and won the 200 in 21.66. He also ran a leg on two state-qualifying relay teams, as the Wildcats finished second in the 400 relay and third in the 800 relay.

SUNRISE SOFTBALL: Coles homers, helps Rancho claim title

After being pulled earlier in the game when she got a little woozy in the heat, Kayla Coles re-entered and blasted a solo home run to help Rancho to an 8-0 win over Liberty in the Sunrise final at Bishop Gorman. It’s the first region title for Rancho, which will compete for its third state title next week in Reno.

SUNRISE SOFTBALL: Rams edge Cougars in wild finish

It took two risky calls, but Rancho coach Amanda Zunno’s decisions paid off when Jahnae Davis-Houston scored from third on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give the Rams a 1-0 victory over Coronado in Thursday’s Division I Sunrise League winners’ bracket final game at Foothill.
