Police shoot knife-wielding man downtown

Police say a man was shot and seriously wounded Tuesday near the downtown area after he swung a knife at an officer. The man, who was in critical condition at University Medical Center, was jaywalking across Fremont Street. He ran into a motel when two officers in a patrol car stopped him. Initiative aims to lift Nevada mining tax cap

A conservative businessman has filed a proposed constitutional amendment to raise the cap on Nevada mining taxes to 9 percent of net proceeds, up from the current 5 percent. The initiative says the measure itself doesn’t require the tax to be raised, but would allow the Legislature to increase the rate that has been in the Nevada Constitution since statehood.

Anger over bobcat video causes meeting tension

Eight armed Nevada Department of Wildlife officers escorted members of the county Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife into the government center Tuesday night. The strong police presence was a safety precaution after the board’s vice chairman posted online a video of his dog barking and lunging at a bobcat snagged in a leg trap.
