In and around Las Vegas City Hall, people were going about their days as usual during the record-breaking heat wave in early June.
The Friday high should be around 109 with slightly lower temperatures on Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
The official airport measuring station reached 108 by 4 p.m. Wednesday. Thursday may top out at 112.
The heat wave may set a record for the earliest 110-degree reading at the Las Vegas airport. Area cooling centers will be open Wednesday through Friday.
But 2020 is expected to start much differently than 2019 did, with three months of below-average precipitation and above-average temperatures.
Heavy rain had struck parts of the valley by 7:35 p.m., and drivers between Las Vegas and Pahrump could see small hail, the weather service tweeted.
Las Vegas is expected to climb back to its average temperatures this week, staying just below 60 degrees for most of the week.
Wednesday’s high should drop to 61, with an 85 percent chance of rain that is expected to linger into Friday.
Sunday hit a high of 75 degrees, and temperatures were expected to jump up to 78 on Monday. After that, the week’s weather will only fluctuate by one degree, meteorologist Ashley Wolf said.
