Many factors affect tomato production

Q: I noticed last year that I didn’t get nearly the same number of tomatoes that I had harvested in previous years. I have a raised bed with a blend of about 4-to-1 cheap compost and our desert soil. Each year I have continued adding compost from my own yard and vegetable scraps. Last year the tomato plants themselves grew well and I saw lots of flowers, but the tomatoes just never developed.

Officials with International Market Centers have announced a change in dates for the winter 2014 Las Vegas Market. The event, held at World Market Center Las Vegas, shifts to Sunday, Jan. 26, through Thursday, Jan. 30.

Extension workshop focuses on local food production

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and Utah State University Cooperative Extension are co-sponsoring a workshop for growers and small food-producing companies, “Farm Products to Food Products: Increased Sales and Season Extension through Value-Added Products.” The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

Jazz in the Park features seasoned and up-and-coming stars

Last year, high school students from the Las Vegas Academy Jazz Combo opened for artists at the Clark County Parks and Recreation Jazz in the Park concert series. ■ LAKE MEAD — Fishing success has been sporadic because of high winds. Anglers should have better odds this weekend with less wind. An angler from the Nevada Striper Club reports that striped bass are hitting on cut bait, but it’s a light bite, so hold your poles or go to free spool. Smallmouth bass have been active, hitting mostly crank baits and tube baits.

CSN softball opens region tourney with rout of Western Nevada

The College of Southern Nevada softball team won its 10th straight game, opening the NJCAA Region XVIII Tournament with a 7-1 victory over Western Nevada College on Wednesday in Twin Falls, Idaho. Mikela Manewa was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Coyotes (34-25).

UCLA tops field for Las Vegas Invitational basketball tournament

UCLA heads the eight-team field for the Las Vegas Invitational basketball tournament, scheduled for Nov. 28 and 29 at Orleans Arena. Joining the Bruins in the 13th annual event are Missouri, Northwestern, UNR, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Indiana University-Purdue University, Morehead State and Gardner Webb.
