Wetlands Park fire is fully contained, officials say

The Clark County Wetlands Park brush fire is completely contained, officials said Thursday.
The confirmation came in an email from Clark County spokesperson Stacey Welling Thursday evening. Welling had said in another email update Thursday morning that the fire was 90 percent contained.
The fire is estimated to have burned 110 acres of park land.
The cause of the fire remained unknown as of Thursday morning, which is common for brush fires, Welling said.
“Generally, fires in an area like this that aren’t caused by lightning are typically human caused,” she said in the Thursday morning email.
The fire broke out Tuesday, with dark smoke visible across the Las Vegas Valley.
The Clark County Wetlands Park is 2,900 acres large and is located near where Tropicana Avenue ends and turns into Broadbent Boulevard in the east valley.
At least three Wetlands fires took place previously this year. Blazes at the park occurred in March, April and earlier in June. But this was by far the largest fire. The second largest was the March blaze, which covered an estimated 34 acres.
Southern Nevada experienced a mild winter and had spring rain, which made conditions ripe for dry brush at risk of burning, Welling said. Wetlands Park and other areas in the region are susceptible to similar fires during the fire season. Wildland fire season runs from May to October.
With the fire nearly fully contained, Wetlands Park is expected to host its Discovery Day on Saturday.
The free event at The Wetlands Park Nature Center will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with crafts, games and live animal encounters.
