■ LAKE MEAD — Fishing has been fair despite windy conditions. Those fishing early in the morning have had the best success. While many anglers are still catching threadfin and gizzard shad for bait, mostly in the coves of Vegas Wash, an increasing number are reporting success with artificial lures. Stripers are hanging in about 30 feet of water near drop-offs. The majority of stripers being caught have been in the 1- to 3-pound range. Largemouth bass are still giving anglers success. Big fish honors at a weekend tournament went to an angler who reeled in a bass that topped 8 pounds. Drop shots and various lures in olive coloration have worked well.
At some point in the next couple of days, the attention is going to shift from who drafted Johnny Manziel to whether Michael Sam gets drafted at all. The former Missouri defensive lineman, who is in line to be the NFL’s first openly gay player, might not get drafted until Saturday.
