No surprise, Nevada’s most unique job is in gaming
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has crunched data to see which jobs have the highest concentration in each state relative to the rest of the U.S., and to no one’s surprise, the gaming industry came out on top in Nevada.
Gaming supervisors make up a higher percentage of jobs in Nevada than in any other state. There are 6.06 gaming supervisor jobs in Nevada for every 1,000 jobs, with 6,990 total jobs.
That’s far more than the next-highest state, California, where there are only 0.16 gaming supervisors per 1,000 jobs.
One might assume, then, that the Las Vegas metro area would have the highest overall percentage of gaming supervisors on a city level, but that award goes to Atlantic City, New Jersey, with 12.97 supervisors per 1,000 jobs, compared to Las Vegas’ 7.13.
Atlantic City pays its supervisors more, too: The average gaming supervisor there makes $57,750, compared to $55,370 in Las Vegas.
Other areas’ most highly concentrated jobs are equally unsurprising: D.C. has the most political scientists, for example, and Texas has a ton of petroleum engineers. But some states’ occupations are head-scratchers to the unfamiliar:
- Mississippi: Upholsterers
- Arkansas: Shoe machine operators and tenders
- Arizona: Plasterers and stucco masons
- Florida: Motorboat operators
- Michigan: Model makers, metal and plastic
