Smith’s to close store in western Las Vegas

The Smith’s Food and Drug store at 6150 W. Flamingo Road will close permanently Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.

No other local closures are planned.

“The store has not been consistently meeting sales or profit expectations,” said spokeswoman Marsha Gilford.

She added the store’s 77 employees were notified Jan. 14, and the company is working with each to find a nearby store for them to transfer to.

“We anticipate we’ll be able to relocate all associates,” Gilford said.

There are three Smith’s stores within three miles of the soon-to-be-closed location. The Flamingo Road Smith’s serves a large apartment complex, Destinations, that’s next to the store. Gilford said the company is making a special effort to work with apartment management to provide residents incentives to shop at the nearby Smith’s at Tropicana Avenue and Jones Boulevard.

Aside from the one store, Gilford said Smith’s is doing well.

“Our business is thriving in Las Vegas. Our customer base is very strong and we intend to invest millions of dollars in remodels in 2014,” she said.

A specific remodel start date wasn’t yet available as Smith’s is under new management.

On Feb. 2, the new division president of Smith’s, Jay Cummins, transfers into his new position. Cummins previously was president of Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic division. He replaces Mark Tuffin, who was named senior vice president of retail divisions.

Cummins has been with the company for more than 40 years. He will be based in the Salt Lake City area.
