Sports facility caters to kids and adult recreational sports

In a city known for grandiose arena proposals, Adam Stio and Joel Hoopaugh figured there was a business niche for a low-key, micro-sports facility that caters to kids and adult recreational sports.

So, the duo invested $150,000 to start up a 27,000-square-foot sports center called the Southern Nevada Sports Centre, which opened Jan. 1.

The facility, which used to house a recycling business and sheet-metal manufacturer, was retrofitted to include 24,000 square feet for a roller hockey, soccer and lacrosse and another 3,000 square feet for events such as concerts, boxing and mixed martial arts fights, Stio said.

The Sports Centre is at 3585 W. Diablo Drive, in an industrial area off Hacienda just west of Interstate 15.

Stio said both he and his friend Hoopaugh have experiences with hockey and bands, so they figured they would be a good team to launch the venture.

“It’s exactly what this town needs. It doesn’t have venues for people of all ages to play soccer, roller hockey and lacrosse. They don’t have the outlets,” Stio said. “This town is for 21 and older. We want to give kids a place to play.”

The duo is leasing the facility from Super Realty, which owns the site.

To retrofit and improve the building, they spent $60,000 of their $150,000 startup costs on preparing the facility for business.

The sports facility is expected to launch a roller-hockey youth program this month, while also having soccer and lacrosse leagues this year, Stio said. The facility features:

■ Membership: For $500, you receive a calendar year of public roller skating at any time, including special events.

■ Free Skate Sessions: Individual admission is $6 for age 6 and older and $5 for age 5 and under. Skate rental is $2. For groups, contact the center for discount admissions.

■ Parties and Events: Available for corporate, bachelor/bachelorette, Sweet 16, private games, fundraisers, etc.

■ Adult House Leagues: Various competitive and recreational play and commitment levels will be available. Adult games are two 24-minute halves. Players statistics, team standings ad season schedules will be updated on the company website.

■ Promotions: Family 4-Pack of skating for two adults and two kids for $20.
