Police arrest man in North Las Vegas stabbings

An estranged husband stabbed his wife and 15-year-old son before turning the knife on himself in a suicide attempt, North Las Vegas police said.

Mario Alejandro Lopez, 37, was arrested Saturday on two counts of attempted murder, burglary with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police officers arrived shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday at a house in the 2600 block of East Tonopah Avenue, near Civic Center Drive, after they received a call about a stabbing. Officers found Lopez, a 32-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy wounded.

Police said an initial investigation revealed Lopez and the woman were in the process of getting divorced. It is alleged that Lopez forced himself into the woman's home and stabbed her multiple times. Police said Lopez also stabbed the couple's 15-year-old son when the boy came to his mother's aid. Lopez then injured himself with the knife.

The two victims and Lopez were taken to University Medial Center.

Police said the woman is in critical condition. The boy's condition was said to be serious.

After he was released from the hospital, Lopez was booked into the Las Vegas detention center.

The couple's six other children, ages 4 to 16, were in the house during the attack, police said. They are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
