Las Vegas to again get federal security funding

The Las Vegas area is back on a national homeland security funding list, and should receive $1 million of more than $400 million the federal government is distributing this year. U.S. Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called the funds “crucial.”

 
Judge rejects lower bail for defendants in pet shop arson case

The two people charged with trying to burn down a pet shop with 27 puppies inside pleaded not guilty Wednesday. Gloria Lee, 35, and Kirk Bills, 27, both appeared before District Judge David Barker in navy blue jail scrubs with their legs and hands shackled.

 
Surveillance video released, puppies to remain at shelter

The 27 dogs nearly burned in an arson attempt will remained caged for now. A district judge set an evidence hearing for next week to determine several issues, including whether Donald Thompson and the corporate entity Prince and Princess Pet Boutique have a rightful claim to the dogs.

 
Man shot by Las Vegas police had fake gun, undersheriff says

The man shot by Las Vegas police last week confronted officers with a fake gun, police said Monday. Jason Mahe, 29, was shot seven times in the parking lot of Dotty’s Casino near Rancho and Vegas drives during the late-night confrontation, according to police. He remained in critical condition at University Medical Center.

 
DA: No charges for officers in jail death

Officers involved in the death of a Clark County jail inmate last year will not face criminal charges, prosecutors said Thursday. The ruling came exactly one year after the death of Luis Solano, 38, who never recovered after being restrained by corrections officers on Feb. 25, 2013.

The mother of the man shot by Las Vegas police late Tuesday after he flashed a handgun at officers says her her son didn’t deserve to be shot. “He’s no angel,” Barbara Sprouse said, “but he did not deserve this.” Her son, 29-year-old Jason Mahe, was shot outside a Dotty’s Casino at Rancho and Vegas drives just before midnight, police said.

 
Man shot by Las Vegas police identified

A man shot and wounded by Las Vegas police after two failed robberies Monday was identified on Tuesday. Julio Estrada-Lopez was arrested on several felony charges, including attempted robbery, assault on a protected person, burglary and attempted grand larceny auto, according to Metro records. Police said Estrada-Lopez, 40, was shot after he pointed his gun at officers about 3:45 p.m. Monday near Charleston Boulevard and U.S. Highway 95.

 
Las Vegas police shoot, wound robbery suspect

A 40-year-old Hispanic man wanted in two attempted robberies was shot by police after he pointed his gun at officers Monday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.
