Lockdown ends at 2 Summerlin schools after Las Vegas police shooting
A man wanted on “violent felonies” was hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot by Las Vegas police Thursday morning in a west valley neighborhood.
About 8:45 a.m., detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s major violators unit arrived on the 500 block of Poplar Leaf Street, near Alta and Pavilion Center drives, and set up a perimeter in an attempt to take the wanted man into custody, according to Capt. Yasenia Yatomi.
Officers asked the man to leave the house, and at some point, the man left the home’s garage in a vehicle and rammed police cars “multiple times,” Yatomi said, prompting officers to open fire. It was unclear how many times the man was struck by gunfire, but he was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries, police said.
Multiple officers fired their weapons, but how many wasn’t clear. The time of the shooting also wasn’t clear. No officers were injured during the encounter, police said.
Police did not disclose the felony charges for which the man was wanted.
The shooting prompted lockdowns for about an hour at Palo Verde High School, 333 S. Pavilion Center Drive, and Rogich Middle School, 235 Pavilion Center Drive, but they were lifted about 10:20 a.m.
The involved officers will be identified within 48 hours, while further details and body camera footage will be released in 72 hours, in line with Metro protocol.
The police shooting was the department’s third this year.
