Police take suspect into custody after barricade situation in south Las Vegas

Las Vegas police have taken a suspect into custody after a Wednesday morning barricade situation at the Loft 5 residential complex near Las Vegas Boulevard South.

Police received multiple calls just after 6:30 a.m. about a man acting erratically in the apartment complex at 2715 W. Pebble Road, authorities said. Callers said there was a man holding a rifle on the balcony of one of the units, that he was acting erratically and that shots had been fired.

The man said to have the gun may have been one of the 911 callers, police said.

Police quickly set up a barrier around the complex and shut down westbound traffic on Pebble Road at Las Vegas Boulevard. Residents inside their apartments were not allowed to leave, and those returning home were left to wait it out in a nearby convenience store’s parking lot.

Loft 5 residents were allowed to go home about 11:20 a.m., about an hour after police said the man was taken into custody.

Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman officer Laura Meltzer said the man may have also entered a neighbor’s apartment, but that resident was able to get out safely.

The SWAT team and crisis negotiators assisted at the scene. SWAT officers took the suspect into custody at 10:18 a.m. No one was injured during the incident, Meltzer said.

Officers recovered a rifle and a handgun from the scene. The man arrested will face charges, Meltzer said.

The department is expected to identify the man after he has been processed at the Clark County Detention Center.
